Two rooms is where most people start.
A price covers the survey, the equipment, the installation, the electrical work and the first year’s service. You get one written price after the survey, and nothing is added on the day.

One outdoor unit, one indoor unit. A bedroom, or a home office.

One outdoor unit can serve several rooms, so the cost per room falls the more you do at once. Most customers start with two and add a third later.

What the price covers
One number, and it is the whole job.
The figure you are given after the survey is the figure you pay. These are the things people are most often surprised to find included — or not.
Included as standard
The survey and the system design. The equipment, indoor and outdoor. The refrigerant pipework, the core drill and the condensate run. The electrical work and its certificate. Commissioning, the F-Gas paperwork, manufacturer registration and the first year's service.
Quoted separately, if needed
A dedicated consumer-unit way if the board is full. Scaffolding, where a unit cannot be reached safely off a ladder or tower. Long pipe runs beyond the usual few metres. Making good on decorative finishes, as opposed to a tidy exit through a wall.
Never added later
Nothing discovered on the day changes the price. If a survey misses something, that is a survey problem, not a customer problem. A revised price, if one is ever needed, is agreed in writing before any work starts.
What moves the number
Why two houses with the same rooms can differ by a thousand pounds.
How far apart things are
The outdoor unit wants to be near the rooms it serves. A bedroom on the far side of the house from the only sensible outdoor position means a longer pipe run, more labour and sometimes a larger unit.
How many rooms at once
One outdoor unit can serve several indoor units, so the cost per room falls the more you do together. Two rooms done at the same time is cheaper than two rooms done a year apart, by a wide margin.
What the house is made of
A timber-framed wall, a rendered block skin and a solid Victorian brick wall are three different drilling jobs. Listed buildings and conservation areas can also change where a unit is allowed to go.
